Cookie Policy
There’s no cookie banner on this site. That isn’t an oversight, there’s nothing here that needs your consent.
That’s a deliberate choice rather than a legal minimum. I’d rather collect nothing than collect whatever I could get away with, so there’s no advertising, no tracking, no profiling, and nothing sold to anyone. This page sets out exactly what the site does store, so you can check for yourself rather than take my word for it.
What the site stores
| What | What it’s for | How long |
|---|---|---|
acss-color-scheme |
Browser storage remembering whether you’ve chosen light or dark | Until you clear it |
light-reduce-motion |
Browser storage remembering if you’ve asked for reduced motion | Until you clear it |
light-rm-fade, light-rm-scroll, light-rm-focus |
Browser storage, set only when you use the reduced motion switch. The page reloads to apply your choice, and these let it fade back in, return you to the same place on the page and, if you used the keyboard, put focus back on the switch | Until the page has reloaded |
light-analytics-optout |
Browser storage remembering that you’ve switched page statistics off | Until you clear it or switch it back on |
gform_* |
A cookie, set only if you start the contact form. Keeps your place and stops duplicate submissions | Session, or 30 days if you save and return |
__cf_bm, _cfuvid |
Cookies from Cloudflare, telling real visitors from bots and keeping the site up | 30 minutes to session |
cf_clearance |
A cookie from Cloudflare, set only if you’re asked to pass a security check. It remembers that you passed | 30 minutes |
wordpress_* |
Cookies set only if someone logs in to the site’s admin, which is me | Session |
Your accessibility preferences are stored in your browser and never sent anywhere. I can’t see them, and they don’t leave your device.
Analytics
I use Cloudflare Web Analytics to see which pages people read. It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device, so there’s nothing to clear out afterwards.
It also doesn’t identify you. Cloudflare doesn’t track visitors over time by IP address, user agent or device fingerprint, and it counts a visit as a page view arriving from another site rather than by recognising anyone. What I get is counts — how many people opened the notes page, which project gets looked at most, roughly which country traffic comes from. There’s no way for me to single out an individual visitor, and I wouldn’t want one.
It works with a small script from static.cloudflareinsights.com, which sends its measurements to Cloudflare. This site already runs through Cloudflare, so nobody new sees your visit.
UK law lets a site count visits like this without asking first, as long as it says what it does and gives you a way to say no. So here’s the switch.
Your choice is remembered in your browser and applies from the next page you open.
What isn’t here
No Google Analytics. No advertising or remarketing tags. No Meta, LinkedIn or TikTok pixels. No embedded social feeds. No third-party fonts loaded from someone else’s server. No session recording or heatmaps.
Images and video are served by Cloudinary, which sizes them for your screen so pages load quickly. It sets no cookies, and like any external request it means your IP address is visible to that service. The carbon rating in the footer is plain text. Your browser makes no request to Website Carbon to show it.
Your control
Your accessibility choices can be changed back at any time with the same controls that set them, and clearing this site’s data in your browser removes them entirely. Every browser lets you block or delete cookies for a site. Look for privacy or site settings. Blocking everything from this domain will still leave the site perfectly usable, since nothing here depends on tracking you.
If this changes
If I ever add something that genuinely needs consent, an embedded video, a map, an advertising tag, a proper banner will appear before it loads, with declining made exactly as easy as accepting. This page will be updated at the same time.
Building this way is one of the principles I run the studio on, along with designing honestly and making things accessible from the start. The full list is on my ethics page.
Questions about any of it, email man@horton.studio and I’ll answer honestly.
